FRY

for Richard Fox

Lighting his stubbed cigarette
from the safety of
the kitchen in his daughter’s house
old Zayde would tell us kids:
They built fences
around the people like we
were cows that roamed;
and not out of wood, either—
Barbed wire electrified
to fry you.

Glancing our way
Mother would shush him,
sprinkling a little oil and garlic
in the pan,
metal so heavy
it took both hands to lift;
frying up the steak and chops
chicken and livers
on the stove top
waiting to hear the sizzle
before dropping them in.
