Love Letter to Leonard Cohen

By Susan Isla Tepper

Did you know Suzanne
in the flesh
so many women
were in love with you
I roamed Hydra
a summer into fall
not a clue
you were living in those
sun-baked hills—
odd coincidence
Suzanne
being part of my repertoire
in the clubs
where I sang in The States
Once I saw your photo
in the newspaper
about to kiss a famous actress
and found myself thinking
he has lush lips
If I’d known
you were right there
I would have jumped
on a donkey
gone in search
It used to be that way
unwilling to quench my desires
