Shedding

By Susan Isla Tepper

Across arid plains
my shoes fell apart
snakes shedding their skin.
A sorrow entered
through my feet
shredding a history
reserved for the dead
I kept on—
until the ground moistened
expectations
Then miniscule worms
screwed their way out of sand
drilling into my soles—
Wretched
beyond imagining
I pushed on
limping: by instinct
and what I’d heard
from others along the route.
