Susan Isla Tepper has a Novella just out from Wilderness House Press titled GIRL UPSIDE DOWN. Men outside can be heard
arguing—
my ear pressed
to a jagged tear in the screen.
 
How many—
if they are the same
men still wearing uniforms
prodding us like cattle
 
I can’t be sure of
anything.
The only window here
angled— the only
that gives us
any air

the rest nailed shut.
 
Is it deliberate
where the men chose to group
out of sight
 
If they keep us here
till summer 
unable to breathe
we will die one by one
or an entire diseased flock.
 
Across the yard
I can see through the screen
daffodils
in this hidden place. 
 
Our single spark of light.

Phoebe Wilcox is an award-nominated novelist and poet whose work explores the intersections of human experience, imagination, and resilience. Her debut novel, Angels Carry the Sun (Lilly Press, 2010), was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award. Her poetry chapbook, Recidivist (Lilly Press, 2010), features the Rhysling Award-nominated poem “A More Significant Sun.” Her poetry has also received recognition through three Pushcart Prize nominations and the Gertrude Stein “Rose” Poetry Prize from Wilderness House Literary Review (2012). Wilcox is currently working on her second novel, Don’t Get Burned. She lives on the East Coast, where she continues to write fiction and poetry.
