Summer Sliding
By Susan Isla Tepper
Take a life
cutting it
into serving slices.
Don’t attempt to
make it come out
even.
There was a time when
summer sliding
into fall—
you stood outside
on the hill
dead leaves crunching
underfoot—
a forthcoming.
You felt afraid
though of what
couldn’t be defined.
