Because

By Susan Isla Tepper

Bring your heart to the fray.
It has a right to be a player
in this mess.
Deliver it
with arms outstretched.
Then gather up
your guns your knives your bats
and other weapons
bringing them to the deep well.
Long dry
and thickly covered.
You almost can’t find it
but you do. Because
all along you knew it was there
right there winding down
to the center of the earth.
And beyond.
