A Boy and His Dog

Far Past

Stay in sight
didn’t register
as he and Digger,
who’d picked up a scent,
pushed toward
Badbury Rings where
King Arthur battled
the Saxons,
far past his mum & dad
taking the scenery in,
walking slowly,
his dad shouting out
again and again
Stay in sight.
At last yelling halt!
His dad was a soldier but
never battled a famous king.
Halt meant business.
Grabbing Digger’s collar
he obeyed.
Then, pulled by an invisible rope
from out of the magical rings
they plunged toward the hill fort,
deaf to all commands.
