Floating
By Susan Isla Tepper
Looking down at the river
its stillness
I spot a dead man floating
white as uncooked flounder.
Not my idea
of a happy day.
I’d brought a sandwich
anxious to eat
my legs dangling in cool water.
The earth is boiling again.
I pray to the current
please take him downstream
so I can have my little picnic.
Then I feel a misery set in
why who am I
to claim ownership
over the river
the living and dead
All who deserve a respite
somewhere, somehow.

Chilling, gripping, and utterly beautiful poem, Susan.
So many thanks from Susan and Glenn.
