Just this once?

I see him all over
not just in dreams
he is the rat in the tunnel that stops
long enough to look me in the eye
the eddy of air on an otherwise still day

when I am asleep
I ask strangers if they have seen him
and the answer is always the same

just a few moments ago

he slipped out of my hand
one drawn breath

and I ask
if he can ever come back

and the answer is always the same

I want to smoke a pipe

As it ties me to you
through the soft curve of the maple,
the sweet smell of tobacco.
I’d click my teeth against the wood,
hold it up in the air just before
quoting Frost:

“I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

I’d take it on walks high into the hills
and watch the smoke drift off into the night.
I’d clean it meticulously
and buy those extra-long matches,
just to keep the flame alive a little longer—
to keep you alive a little longer.

Yolk against the darkness

Dusk lingering still
Someone thinking of breakfast
eggs, sunny side up.
