TRAILS

By Susan Isla Tepper

When the heart
finally retches truth
you say
I do not know

gladly lying down
assuming
here is death

the many storms
limbs twisted

Lights flickering
to burn out
when the need
is most:
Outside
you beyond you

suffer the trails
you dared not wander
