The 2:27 to Walalassa Falls

Thea lives in a house
with wings
three down from the tracks

sixty-two train whistles
every twenty-four hours.

There are only
so many numbers
a body can absorb.

When Thea feels her head
about to concuss
she informs the house:
Time to spread your wings

and the grey shingled
two-story
lifts toward the sun or moon
dependant upon
the Gregorian Calendar
O the chanting…

Her mother’s choice
far less exotic
seems almost simplistic
when Thea looks back.

Adele made the jump.
A train thundered by
at approximately 2:15
in the afternoon
cloudy with a chance of rain.

Details
plus the actual recorded time
in the paper:
The 2:27 to Walalassa Falls.

Just a day after
Thea turned twelve in May.
She wonders if those falls
were roaring, too.
