WITHOUT WARNING

By Susan Isla Tepper

Winter we will not forget
your hard bone
splicing our thoughts
setting an anxious tone

the paths now mostly mud

during daily walks
procrastinating
which route to take

Without warning

Bits & pieces of
loveliness pop up
unaccountably:

a branch in the stream
splayed like a woman
exalting in her ecstasy
the water icy, still
puffs out bubbles
makes its own desire.
