Invasion

By Susan Isla Tepper

Little town built up
around narrow roads
postage stamp lots
& fields
overgrown
where tractors loll
—what’s become
of the men who

Homes in rows
slapped together
far too modest
to be designated houses—
could be grafts of
skin covering deep wounds

At noon you stop
pulling over
traffic light
few cars coming the other way

the sky is thrashing
sunny then darkest cloud cover

You eat your sandwich
also slapped together
out of the brown bag;
There’s an apple, too,
money being tight;
chewing, thoughtful
looking for clues
Why am I here.
