Sabines
By Susan Isla Tepper
Bones carried on platters
presented to the tables of multitudes.
Not the red flesh they craved
one and all— this pack of
weak jawed misfits
lips stained with blood from the lamb
O crucified eyes
how they relished clear running
fats pouring from
the font of animals slain.
Patient, waiting,
watching for their time to spring
protruding tongues flickering
for the spray’s tingle,
kneeling at the font
fiery as flesh in the bed
this mastery over darkness.
