Sunny Place

By Susan Isla Tepper

Because you’re waiting
for this to be over,
you find a sunny place
to rest ‘til
the time comes
to see him
Broken-in like a horse
behind barbed wire
a stolen life
not meant to be saddled
If the bus you arrive on
drops you
at a changed wall
you can’t be held
accountable for the Sweet Peas
you trample
from the basket also holding
a sandwich and tea
