WALTER MACKEN CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
AN TAIBHDHEARC Theatre, Middle Street, Galway

Walter Macken*, Galway’s most famous writer, was born one hundred years ago this May. An Taibhdhearc theatre in association with the Galway’s West End community are presenting a series of events to celebrate his centenary.
Tom Kenny kicks off with a talk in the Taibhdhearc on 30th April, followed by a STREET PARTY on St Joseph’s Avenue where Walter was born, on SUNDAY 3RD MAY from 3-5 PM.
Come join in the fun with music, readings and drama along with local residents.
There is also a series of lectures, readings and films in An Taibhdhearc 12-15 May.

*Walter Macken wrote popular novels which sold millions of copies worldwide, like ‘Rain on the Wind’ and the trilogy, ‘Seek the Fair Land’, ‘The Scorching Wind’ and ‘The Silent People’. He was also Artistic Director of An Taibhdhearc from 11939- 1947, where he wrote and translated plays, acted, directed and painted sets.
His son Ultan Macken will give talks in An Taibhdhearc along with other guest lecturers, readings and excerpts with actors. The film, ‘Flight of the Doves’, written by Walter Macken and made into film for children, will be shown for schools on WEDNESDAY 13th MAY.
And on Friday 15th May, a very special event will be held in An Taibhdhearc. ‘FROM STREET TO STAGE’ , when the local West End community will come into the theatre with the scenes from the street party and a film documentary of that day will be shown, complete with local residents and actors.
