This Is Where We Say Goodbye

By Susan Isla Tepper

A river runs backward
in dreams only

I learned hard
love can’t extinguish
your sorrow

Meeting at this barren place
not my idea—
your last gasp

I feel you against me
here, too,
pressing—
and in other ways

This earth makes impossible
claims—
on us, the wind,
You need to bend:
a simple everyday walk
can be lost
to other considerations.
The way churches and the rich
rationalize torture.
