IRIDESCENT
By Susan Isla Tepper
Inside the truck to freedom
a division:
two filthy barren spaces
brown walls patchy, uneven
a couple of tilted chairs
ready to collapse:
one connected would seat three.
Immediately I registered my indignity:
Painted on the side your truck says
Bound for the U.S.
My partner hushed me; nervous;
telling them we would make do.
A few men wandered inside,
sat down in certain chairs
where raw fish, iridescent in death
were arranged on the floor
in semi-circles.
