The Gift

By Susan Isla Tepper

It went beyond
the ravages of time
this quest to find out

A child you thought
it would freeze over and
you could skip across

Reach the far mountain
still a stirring desire

What does it know
how many secrets
clutched in its crevices

intentional or otherwise
looming over
the perpetual beauty
