Break-up

Pilgrims of water, each stone
rolls pushed by others along
the storm-packed stream
bubbling out of the culvert,
snowmelt and cloud-drip,
the collateral of wind,
gurgling and seething, cutting
swaths in the bank,
no dams to stop it,
white water surging over
the path, denting the metal
from the weight of stones
it’s dislodged, a fever
met by kingfishers
who dip their beaks
in its deluge.

If

If wildness had five fingers
held inside a glove,
I take off the glove
and let the wildness loose,
let rain fall across my palm,
snowmelt sluice across
my boots, vernal ponds
too deep to tread. No lilacs yet
but soon their heartbeats
break open their buds,
pepper the sky with fragrance.
