Frenzy

By Susan Isla Tepper

You turn a corner
and darkness
heavy with sleep
pummels the body’s
choruses of deliverance:
pipe organs, screams,
bells—
You rip out your heart,
look down
examine the contents.
Could it simply
be the birds
gone batty / a frenzy
smashing against the glass.
