PENDING

From Steinway Street’s far side,
I watch you
standing at the pet shop window.

Oblivious to the rush masses,
pouring from the subway,
you smile at the puppies
as they romp and roll,
in their alien world.

One day we will take one home,
but not to day,
to our sparse studio,
and we with green cards
pending.

SLEEPLESS

Here with the clock for company.
Rattles from the wind in the mail-box,
with my cup of tea,
I think of birthdays,
who is next.
The loved ones gone ,
nearer now than ever.

Later birdsong,
faint and far away.
Then in full chorus,
heralding another day.

I will bake a cake now,
or even two.
Thank you God ,
for thoughts and things to do.

SPRING CLEANING

There you are,
at the back of an old bureau,
smiling from your memorial card.

You smiled in the face
of poverty and pain.
Your open door
welcomed us.

You’d emerge from a back room,
carrying long stemmed glasses.
Always something to celebrate.

Energised now by your radiance,
I finish my chores.
You are the breath of Spring.
