Galway’s literary merits have by no means been confined to her celebrated contributions to the Irish Literary Revival.
The ‘Cultural Capital of Ireland’ has routinely furnished the country with some its finest authors. From Pádraic Ó Conaire to James Joyce, here is the story of Galway’s other literary connections. Pádraic Ó Conaire, James Joyce, Walter Macken, Ellís Dillon
Today, Galway remains a thriving centre for the arts and literature. Her past is decorated elaborately with some of the greatest poets and playwrights of our time, and the trend is not likely to stop.
The heritage of Galway may include the likes of Joyce, Yeats and Ellís Dillon, but the contemporary writers of Galway are more than happy to lead the way into the second millennium of the Ireland’s literary fame. Indicative of this movement is the contemporary writer Rita Ann Higgins, of Galway, who has published six collections of poetry and has been translated into languages ranging from French and Swedish to Hebrew.
Galway’s finest story is sure to go on, and we will await eagerly the future tales her writers will tell.
